How Methylene Blue Works

Methylene Blue acts as an alternative electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. It accepts electrons from NADH and delivers them directly to cytochrome c, bypassing Complex I-III — increasing oxygen consumption and ATP production while reducing oxidative stress. In its reduced form (leuco-MB), it functions as a direct free radical scavenger, then recycles back to its oxidized form — creating a self-renewing antioxidant cycle within mitochondria. MB crosses the blood-brain barrier easily, concentrating in neuronal mitochondria.
